Scotland Fans Lose Thousands as US Revokes World Cup Travel Permits Without Explanation

Dozens of Scotland fans have had their US travel authorisations cancelled without warning, with some facing losses of over £10,000 just days before the World Cup begins.

Tartan Army fans who booked World Cup travel months ago in good faith are now in a race against time to secure emergency visas before Scotland's opening game on 13 June.

Dozens of Scotland fans have woken up this week to find their US travel authorisation has flipped from approved to not permitted, with no warning and no explanation from American authorities.

If you are booked to travel to Boston or Miami to watch the Tartan Army at their first World Cup in 28 years, check your ESTA status right now. The system is updating in real time, and the switch can happen within hours.

Some fans have already spent over £10,000 on flights, hotels and match tickets, all booked in good faith after receiving ESTA approval. Scotland play Haiti in Boston on 13 June. The clock is running out.

The Key Facts

  • Dozens of fans affected — ESTAs silently switching from “approved” to “travel not authorised” with no individual explanation given
  • No reason will be provided — the US Embassy confirmed it cannot tell fans why their ESTA was revoked
  • Continuous vetting in force — DHS says all ESTA applications are checked against security databases in real time under Trump administration enforcement
  • Scotland’s World Cup games — Haiti 13 June Boston, Morocco 19 June Boston, Brazil 24 June Miami
  • Emergency visa route — US Embassy London and Consulate General Belfast are taking urgent World Cup cases now

What Is Actually Happening

UK citizens need an ESTA before flying to the United States for stays of up to 90 days. The form costs $40 (around £31) and normally approves within 24 hours, staying valid for two years.

An approved ESTA covers multiple trips. Tens of thousands of Tartan Army fans applied months ago, paid the fee, and thought they were set.

This week, dozens of fans say their status has silently flipped to “travel not authorised” with no email warning. Some watched it move to “pending” before dropping further within a couple of hours.

The US Department of Homeland Security has confirmed the revocations are happening. Lauren Bis, acting assistant secretary for the department, said the Trump administration is enforcing immigration laws and that all ESTA applications are continuously vetted against law enforcement and security databases.

Bis also confirmed that an approved ESTA does not guarantee entry to the United States. Failure to disclose arrests or convictions, she added, can result in denial, revocation, or a permanent bar from entering.

The US Embassy told affected fans it cannot give a reason for individual revocations. Some have been told the decision could be a mistake, or simply random. Fans showing “pending” status have been asked to wait up to 72 hours.

What Scotland Fans Are Saying Right Now

On X, BBC Scotland News broke the story on Wednesday 4 June and it spread rapidly across the Tartan Army community:

“Scotland fans heartbroken as travel permits to World Cup withdrawn last minute.”

The report drew immediate responses from affected fans and raised widespread concern about US entry requirements ahead of the tournament. View on X

Many Tartan Army fans were already departing or en route when the BBC Scotland report broke on Wednesday, prompting a wave of others to check their ESTA status in a panic.

Scott Braid, 43, an engineer from Kirkcaldy, told BBC Scotland News what happened the morning his ESTA changed:

He applied in April and was approved within 24 hours, then spent around £8,000 on accommodation and travel, with hundreds more on match tickets, believing he was all set.

“Out of the blue on Tuesday, I got an email that said there’s been an update on your ESTA status. The frustrating thing is not knowing why this has happened.”

Scott said he is encouraging his family to travel ahead without him while he pursues an emergency visa appointment in Belfast the day before his flight. Read the full story on BBC Scotland

Brothers Andrew and Nelson Speirs, also from Kirkcaldy, applied in December 2025 and were approved within 24 hours. On 3 June their status changed without warning. Nelson told The National:

The brothers had planned a £10,000 trip to Miami to mark Andrew’s 40th birthday. They now have an emergency consulate appointment in Belfast on 11 June, the opening day of the World Cup itself.

“They shouldn’t authorise somebody to go then take it back. We didn’t book anything until we were authorised.”

What You Can Actually Do

Here is what to do right now if your ESTA status has changed, or if you have not checked it since you made your travel bookings.

US passport and boarding pass documents placed on laptop computer for travel visa preparation
Gathering every travel document for the emergency visa interview, including the ESTA approval screenshot and flight bookings, gives fans the strongest possible case for a fast-track decision.
  1. Check your status immediately at esta.cbp.dhs.gov. If it shows “pending”, you may have up to 72 hours before a final decision; do not assume it will restore automatically.
  2. If it shows “travel not authorised”, apply for a B1/B2 visitor visa immediately. Do not wait to see if the ESTA reinstates. Processing takes three to five working days after your interview, and time is extremely short.
  3. Book an emergency appointment at the US Embassy in London or the US Consulate General in Belfast. Both are handling World Cup cases. If no slots show online, call the embassy directly rather than waiting for the system.
  4. Tell your airline in writing. Many carriers will offer a date change or fee waiver when a documented visa issue is involved. Put the request in writing and keep copies of every response you receive.
  5. Call your travel insurer. Check your policy specifically for trip cancellation cover due to visa denial. Some policies include this; others exclude it entirely. Call rather than reading alone, and ask for a written confirmation.
  6. Contact your MP or MSP. Several Scottish politicians are already pressing the Foreign Office on this issue. A referral from an elected representative can sometimes accelerate a consular response significantly.
Genius Tip Bring everything to the visa interview: your ESTA approval screenshot, flight and hotel bookings, match tickets, bank statements and return travel proof. The more clearly you can show you are a short-stay football fan with ties at home, the stronger your case for a fast-track decision.

Why This Is Happening

The US government has not given a specific reason for the revocations. Under Visa Waiver Programme rules, individual applicants are not entitled to one.

In December 2025, the White House announced plans to expand ESTA screening to include social media checks, requiring up to five years of social media history from applicants. Some of those requirements are now partially in force.

Affected fans have speculated this screening could be a factor in some revocations, though the government has given no confirmation linking the checks specifically to the Scotland cases.

Kenny Smith, 45, a security company director from Inverness, used his ESTA for a New York trip in November 2025. This week it was revoked without explanation. He told The National:

Smith had spent over £10,000 on World Cup travel. He applied for a B1/B2 visa immediately but was first offered an appointment after the tournament. Embassy staff helped bring it forward, leaving him a roughly 50-50 chance of making his flight.

“I am part of a folk-rock band called Torridon, so I just wonder whether they looked at my profile, saw a guitar and thought this guy’s not got a working visa.”

Hamish Husband, of the Association of Tartan Army Clubs, said the ESTA problem is the latest blow in a difficult run-up. High hotel prices, rising stadium transport costs, a ban on refillable water bottles at matches, and now this have all landed in quick succession before kick-off.

US Customs and Border Protection continuously vets all travellers against security databases. The Trump administration has confirmed revocations are happening but says no individual reason will be given to affected fans.

The urgency is real. Every day spent waiting on a possible ESTA reinstatement is a day that cannot be recovered before Scotland’s 13 June opening game.
