Relaxing Break on Osea Island
On a cold weekend in late January, we had the pleasure of discovering Osea Island, it off the beaten track experience. Nestled away from the hustle and bustle Osea Island offers a perfect blend of rest and relaxation as well as luxury accommodation with a boutique and classic design.
Osea Island Causeway
One of the most different aspects of Osea Island is its unique access route. The island is connected to the mainland by a tidal causeway visible only during low tide. This natural bridge allows visitors to drive across the estuary, adding an element of adventure to the journey. Timing your arrival and departure with the tides is essential, as the causeway is submerged during high tide, making the island feel like an exclusive retreat.
Accommodation on Osea Island
Osea Island offers a range of accommodation options, each designed to provide a cozy and comfortable stay. The island’s lodgings cater to various preferences and group sizes, from charming cottages to grand manor houses. During our stay, we opted for one of the quaint beach cottages, which was tastefully decorated with a mix of vintage and modern furnishings. The cottage featured a fully equipped kitchen, a cozy living area with a fireplace and beautiful rooms with four poster beds. It was the perfect setting to just switch off and have some time to yourself.

Osea Island boasts a rich history that dates back to ancient times. Over the centuries, it has served various purposes, from a site of religious significance in the Roman era to a strategic military base during both World Wars. Walking around the island you can discover remnants of its storied past, including old military buildings and a chapel that once served as a place of worship for soldiers stationed there.
In the early 20th century, Osea Island was transformed into a retreat for the wealthy by Frederick Charrington, a philanthropist and temperance advocate. Charrington envisioned the island as a sanctuary for those seeking to escape the temptations of modern life, and his legacy is still evident today in the island’s peaceful atmosphere and well-preserved buildings.
Peace & Relaxtion on Osea
What truly sets Osea Island apart is its tranquil ambiance. Free from the distractions of modern life, the island offers a unique opportunity to unwind and recharge. During our stay, we explored the scenic trail around the island’s edge. Its village centre features a pub, but sadly this is only open in peak season, so we had to bring all our supplies with us. It also has bicycles outside every accommodation so you can jump on a bike and go exploring, plus all stays with a ground floor are pet friendly.
