Kariega Game Reserve
Kariega Game Reserve is a prime example of a beautiful African safari where you will get up close and personal to lions, elephants, rhinos and more in their completely natural habitat without human interference. Located in the beautiful Eastern Cape of South Africa the natural habitat of Kariega Game Reserve straddles the banks of the Bushman River with open plains, deep valleys and bush covered hilltops. This rewilded habitat of 11,500 hectare provides space for a crash of Rhinos or a heard of Elephants to roam freely in a completely natural daily routine without human interference.

Kariega Safari
A morning sunrise and evening sundown Safari will keep you busy during the day and give you the best opportunities to see an absolute myriad of species such as hippo, hyena, giraffe, zebras and more. We literally can’t list them all here but your guide will be able to tell you everything about the habitat, how it fosters life from insects to birds then works its way through the food chain to the larger game living in Kariega.

South African Safari Tour
Every safari tour is different with no predefined route, your guide will track different families and species in the reserve to give you the best encounter. Some of our favourites were the new baby rhino about with its mum, watching three herds of elephants coming together and lions feasting after a kill! You don’t have to be a wildlife expert as the guides are there to teach you whatever you want to know and there is no such thing as a silly question. We enjoyed how our guide built each safari around what we’d like to see and what would be going on while we were in the bush. The end of every day is marked with a spectacular ‘sundowner’. Enjoying a drink and view across the reserve served from your safari cruiser.

Walking Safari
We were extremely lucky during our stay to experience a walking safari. If you are happy to walk with your guide you can experience the wildlife from a different angle. A Safari on foot is a completely different encounter as the animals are a lot more wary of feet on the ground than the usual rumble of the cruisers, your guide will show you how to track whilst minimising any disturbance to the animals to get as close as you can. A walking safari will be with giraffes, elephants or any animals that wouldn’t want you as part of their dinner, so you are always safe. This is a must of an experience if you get the opportunity!
